100+ Questions Answered

Everything You Want to Know About Studying Abroad

Find answers to every question students and parents ask — from IELTS scores to visa funds, scholarships to post-study work rights.

General Study Abroad Questions
Why should I study abroad?
+
Studying abroad gives you access to world-class education, global career opportunities, international exposure, and higher earning potential. A foreign degree is recognised by employers worldwide and often accelerates career growth significantly compared to staying in India.
Which country is best for studying abroad from India?
+
The UK is our top recommendation for most Indian students due to its 1-year Master's degrees, 2-year post-study work visa, and lower total cost. The USA offers world-class rankings; Canada provides a PR pathway; Australia offers a relaxed lifestyle. The best country depends on your budget, course, and career goals.
When should I start my study abroad application?
+
Ideally 12–18 months before your intended intake. For September intake, start by October the previous year. This gives time for IELTS preparation, document collection, university applications, and visa processing without stress.
What is the best intake for studying abroad?
+
September/October intake (Autumn) has the widest choice of courses and universities. January/February intake is a strong alternative if you miss September. May intake exists in some countries like Australia. September is recommended for most students.
Can I study abroad after completing 12th grade?
+
Yes. You can apply for undergraduate (UG) programmes abroad after 12th grade. Many UK and US universities accept direct 12th grade applications. Some may require a foundation year depending on your grades and board results.
Can I study abroad after a gap year?
+
Yes — a gap year is acceptable at most universities if you can explain it positively in your SOP. Gaps due to exam preparation, family reasons, or work experience are generally accepted. We advise on how to present your gap year effectively.
What documents are required for studying abroad?
+
Typically: academic transcripts, degree certificate, IELTS/TOEFL scores, Statement of Purpose (SOP), Letters of Recommendation (LOR), valid passport, CV/resume, and financial documents. Country-specific requirements may include additional documents. We provide a complete checklist for your specific application.
What is GPA and how is it calculated from Indian marks?
+
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a 4.0 scale used by US universities. Indian percentage to GPA: 90–100% ≈ 4.0, 80–89% ≈ 3.7, 70–79% ≈ 3.3, 60–69% ≈ 3.0. UK and Australian universities typically use percentage directly. We help you understand your profile strength for each country.
Is studying abroad worth the money?
+
For most students, yes. A UK or Australian Master's degree can take just 1 year, helping you save a full year of living costs compared with longer programmes. Graduates from top foreign universities often earn more than domestic counterparts within 5 years, depending on field, location and work experience.
What are the cheapest countries to study abroad?
+
Germany offers many free or very low-cost public university programmes (€0–€3,000/year tuition). Ireland, the Netherlands and some Eastern European countries offer affordable English-medium programmes. The UK, despite higher tuition, can reduce total cost through its 1-year Master's degrees.
Can I get a job after studying abroad?
+
Yes. The UK's Graduate Route allows 2 years of work after graduation. Australia offers 2–4 years. Canada and Germany offer strong PR pathways. Most international graduates find employment within 6–12 months of graduation with proper career preparation.
Can I bring my family while studying abroad?
+
Dependant visas are available in most countries. In the UK, since January 2024, most Master's students cannot bring dependants unless an exception applies, such as certain government-funded scholarships. PhD students can bring dependants. Canada and Australia have more flexible family visa options.
What are the most popular courses for Indian students abroad?
+
Top courses: Computer Science, Data Science, Business Analytics, MBA, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Finance, Nursing, Public Health, and Cyber Security. These courses have strong employment outcomes and are widely available across the UK, USA, Canada and Australia.
Is a study abroad consultancy necessary or can I apply directly?
+
You can apply directly, but a consultant significantly improves your chances through proper university selection, stronger SOP writing, complete documentation, and visa guidance. Most successful international students from India use a consultancy. YKR Global offers free initial consultation before you commit.
How does YKR Global select universities for me?
+
We evaluate your academic profile, IELTS score, budget, target country, career goals and course interest. We then create a shortlist of reach, match and safe universities to maximise your chances of receiving strong offers while aiming high.
🇬🇧 Studying in the United Kingdom
What is the UK Student Route visa?
+
The UK Student Route (formerly Tier 4) is the main visa for international students studying in the UK. You need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your university, proof of English, and sufficient funds. We guide you through every step of the application.
How much does it cost to study in the UK?
+
Master's tuition: £12,000–£30,000/year. Living costs outside London: £10,000–£12,000/year. In London: £14,000–£16,000/year. Total for a 1-year Master's degree: approximately £22,000–£42,000. The UK is cost-efficient because most Master's programmes are just 1 year.
What IELTS score is required for UK universities?
+
Most UK universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall. Top universities (Russell Group) typically require 6.5–7.0. Some foundation and pre-sessional programmes accept 5.5. We match you to universities that accept your current score.
What is the UK Graduate Route visa?
+
The Graduate Route allows international students who have completed a UK degree to stay and work (or look for work) in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD graduates) without needing a job offer. This is one of the most valuable aspects of studying in the UK.
Can I work part-time in the UK as a student?
+
Yes. UK student visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. Average part-time earnings: £8–£12/hour. This can cover a significant portion of your monthly living expenses.
How much money do I need to show for a UK student visa?
+
You must show: full first year's tuition fee + £1,334 per month for up to 9 months (outside London) or £1,023/month (if your university provides accommodation). For London: £1,334/month. Funds must be held for 28 consecutive days. We help you prepare your financial documents correctly.
What are the best universities in the UK for Indian students?
+
Top choices include University of Manchester, University of Leeds, University of Birmingham, University of Sheffield, Coventry University, Northumbria University, and University of Hertfordshire. Russell Group universities offer highest prestige; post-92 universities often offer easier admission and strong employment support.
What is the Russell Group of universities?
+
The Russell Group is an association of 24 leading UK research universities including Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Bristol and others. Russell Group degrees are highly valued by employers globally. We help students get into Russell Group universities where their profile is competitive.
Is the UK safe for Indian students?
+
The UK is generally very safe for international students. UK cities have a large Indian student community providing a support network. Major university cities like Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds are welcoming and diverse. Our UK-based team provides on-ground guidance after you arrive.
How long does a UK student visa take to process?
+
Standard UK student visa processing takes 3 weeks (15 working days). Priority processing is available for an additional fee and takes 5 working days. We recommend applying as soon as you receive your CAS and at least 6 weeks before your course start date.
Can I extend my stay in the UK after graduation?
+
Yes. After completing your degree, you can switch to the Graduate Route (2 years), then to a Skilled Worker visa if you find a job. With 5 years of continuous UK residence, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and after that, British citizenship.
Are UK degrees recognised in India?
+
Yes — UK degrees are widely recognised and highly respected by employers in India and globally. UK universities are accredited by recognised UK bodies. Degrees from reputed UK universities carry significant value in the Indian job market, especially in IT, finance, engineering and management sectors.
What is a CAS number in the UK visa process?
+
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is a unique reference number issued by your UK university after you accept their offer and meet all conditions. You need this number to apply for your UK Student visa. We guide you on how and when to request your CAS.
Can I do a PhD in the UK as an Indian student?
+
Yes — the UK is excellent for PhDs. Typical duration is 3–4 years. Many PhDs are fully funded through scholarships (UKRI, university scholarships, Commonwealth). After a PhD, you get 3 years on the Graduate Route visa. We guide you through funded PhD applications.
What healthcare is available for students in the UK?
+
International students pay an Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of the visa fee (currently £776/year). This gives you full access to the NHS — the UK's free national healthcare system. You can register with a local GP near your university.
🇺🇸 Studying in the United States
What visa do I need to study in the USA?
+
Most international students use an F-1 Student Visa for academic programmes. You need a Form I-20 from a SEVIS-approved US institution, proof of financial support, and evidence of ties to your home country. We guide you through the DS-160 form, SEVIS fee, and visa interview preparation.
What is OPT and STEM OPT in the USA?
+
Optional Practical Training (OPT) lets F-1 students work in the USA for 12 months after graduation. Students with STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 3 years of US work authorisation after graduation.
What GRE score is needed for US universities?
+
Top US universities typically require GRE scores of 155+ in Verbal and 160+ in Quantitative. Many universities have now made GRE optional. We advise whether GRE is needed for your specific target universities and courses, and help you prepare strategically.
How much does it cost to study in the USA?
+
US Master's tuition: $20,000–$60,000/year. Living costs: $12,000–$20,000/year. Total for a 2-year Master's degree: $64,000–$160,000. However, many universities offer teaching assistantships (TA) or research assistantships (RA) that cover tuition and provide a stipend.
Can I work part-time while studying in the USA?
+
F-1 students can work on-campus for up to 20 hours/week during the term and full-time during holidays. Off-campus work requires authorization (Curricular Practical Training / CPT or OPT). We help you understand your work entitlements before departure.
What TOEFL score is required for US universities?
+
Most US universities require a TOEFL iBT score of 80–100. Top universities may require 100+. IELTS is also widely accepted in the USA (typically 6.5–7.0). Some universities accept Duolingo English Test as an alternative. We advise the best test based on your target universities.
What is CPT in the USA?
+
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to work off-campus as part of their curriculum — for internships or co-op programmes. CPT is authorised by your Designated School Official (DSO) and must be integral to your course. Using 12+ months of full-time CPT affects OPT eligibility.
What are the top universities in the USA for Indian students?
+
Popular choices: Northeastern University, Arizona State University, University of Southern California, Texas A&M, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Choosing depends on your course, budget, and career goals. We tailor recommendations to your profile.
How competitive is admission to US universities?
+
Top-50 US universities are highly competitive, requiring strong GPA (3.5+), GRE scores, work experience, and outstanding SOPs. However, many reputable state universities and private universities in the 50–200 range accept students with average profiles. We create a balanced shortlist for your specific background.
Can I get an MBA in the USA as an Indian student?
+
Yes — the USA is the top destination for MBAs. You'll need a GMAT score (550–750 depending on the university), 2–5 years of work experience, strong SOPs, and LORs. Top MBA schools include Harvard, Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, and Stern. We guide you through the full MBA application process.
🇨🇦 Studying in Canada
Can I get PR (Permanent Residency) after studying in Canada?
+
Yes — Canada is one of the best countries for PR after study. After graduating, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) for up to 3 years. After gaining Canadian work experience, you can apply for PR through Express Entry or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
What is the PGWP (Post-Graduation Work Permit) in Canada?
+
The Post-Graduation Work Permit allows international graduates from eligible Canadian institutions to work in Canada for up to 3 years after graduation. The length of the PGWP corresponds to the length of your study programme (minimum 8 months to maximum 3 years).
How much does it cost to study in Canada?
+
Tuition: CAD 15,000–45,000/year depending on the programme. Living costs: CAD 10,000–15,000/year. Total for a 2-year Master's degree: approximately CAD 50,000–120,000. Some provinces are more affordable than others (for example, Quebec has lower tuition for some programmes).
What IELTS score is required for Canadian universities?
+
Most Canadian universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Top universities may require 7.0. TOEFL iBT scores of 80–90 are also widely accepted. We advise on which test suits you based on your current English proficiency.
Can I work while studying in Canada?
+
Yes — international students in Canada can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks (since 2022, the previous 20-hour limit was increased). On-campus work has no hour limit. This significantly helps with living costs.
What are the top universities in Canada?
+
Top Canadian universities: University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, McGill University, McMaster University, University of Alberta, York University, and Toronto Metropolitan University. Canada also has excellent colleges like Seneca, Humber, and George Brown for diploma programmes.
What is Express Entry and how does it work for Indian students?
+
Express Entry is Canada's main immigration system for skilled workers. Points are awarded based on age, education, work experience, and language skills (CRS score). Canadian study and work experience significantly boosts your CRS score, making PR more achievable. We advise on long-term PR planning alongside your studies.
Has Canada tightened student visa rules for Indian students?
+
Yes — Canada introduced a cap on international student permits in 2024 and tightened PGWP eligibility rules. DLI (Designated Learning Institution) status of your chosen college/university now matters more. We ensure we only recommend DLI-approved, PGWP-eligible institutions so your PR pathway remains open.
Which Canadian province is best for Indian students?
+
Ontario (Toronto, Mississauga) has the largest Indian community and most job opportunities. British Columbia (Vancouver) offers a great lifestyle. Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton) is growing fast. Quebec has lower tuition but requires French. Manitoba and Saskatchewan have active PNP programmes for PR. We advise based on your specific career goals.
🇦🇺 Studying in Australia
What visa do I need to study in Australia?
+
You need a Student Visa (subclass 500). You must be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course, have sufficient funds, meet health and English requirements, and demonstrate genuine temporary entrant (GTE) intent. We prepare your GTE statement carefully — it's one of the most critical parts of the Australian visa application.
How much does it cost to study in Australia?
+
Master's tuition: AUD 20,000–45,000/year. Living costs: AUD 15,000–22,000/year. Total for a 1.5–2 year Master's degree: approximately AUD 60,000–130,000. Australia is more expensive than the UK due to longer course duration and higher living costs, but it offers strong PR pathways in return.
Can I work while studying in Australia?
+
Yes — since 2023, there is no longer a cap on working hours during your studies (previously 48 hours per fortnight). Students can now work unlimited hours. The minimum wage in Australia is AUD 23.23/hour, making part-time work very lucrative for covering living costs.
What are the Go8 universities in Australia?
+
The Group of Eight (Go8) are Australia's top research universities: University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of Sydney, University of Queensland, Monash University, University of Western Australia, University of Adelaide, and UNSW Sydney. These are equivalent to UK's Russell Group.
What is the post-study work visa in Australia?
+
The Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) allows graduates to stay and work in Australia. Master's graduates get 2–4 years depending on location, with regional study sometimes providing extra time. This provides valuable work experience towards Australian PR through SkillSelect.
What IELTS score is needed for Australian universities?
+
Most Australian universities require IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Go8 universities may require 6.5–7.0. For nursing, teaching and healthcare programmes, requirements are typically higher (7.0+). We match your IELTS score to appropriate programmes.
What is GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) for Australia?
+
The GTE requirement assesses whether you genuinely intend to temporarily study in Australia and not misuse the student visa for immigration. You must demonstrate strong ties to India (family, property, employment) and a clear academic purpose. We help you craft a strong GTE statement that satisfies the visa officer.
Can I get PR in Australia after studying?
+
Yes — Australia has a clear PR pathway. After graduating and working on a 485 visa, you can apply for the Skilled Independent visa (189), Skilled Nominated visa (190), or regional visas (491). Points are awarded for age, education, English proficiency, and work experience.
Is Australia good for healthcare and nursing courses?
+
Australia is excellent for healthcare and nursing. Nursing graduates are in high demand due to a critical shortage. After graduation and registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), nurses can work immediately and are eligible for multiple PR pathways due to healthcare being on the skilled occupation list.
Visa & Immigration Questions
What is the most common reason for student visa rejection?
+
The most common reasons are: insufficient funds, weak ties to home country, inconsistent documents, unclear study purpose, previous visa rejections not disclosed, gaps in study not explained, and poor SOP. We conduct a pre-visa risk review to identify and address any weaknesses before submission.
What happens if my student visa is rejected?
+
A visa rejection is not the end. You can reapply after addressing the reason for rejection. You must always disclose previous rejections on future visa applications — hiding this is a serious offence. We help you analyse the refusal reason and build a stronger reapplication. A gap in timeline can be used for the next intake.
Do I need travel insurance while studying abroad?
+
Travel insurance is strongly recommended and sometimes mandatory. UK students pay Immigration Health Surcharge for NHS access. Australia requires Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). USA and Canada require private health insurance. We advise on the right health cover for your destination.
Can I change my course or university after getting a visa?
+
In the UK, changing universities usually requires a new CAS and sometimes a new visa application. In Australia, changing providers requires approval from your current institution. In the USA, your F-1 status must be transferred. We advise on university/course changes and their visa implications.
What is biometric enrollment for a student visa?
+
Most countries require biometrics (fingerprints and photo) as part of the student visa process. In the UK, this is done at a UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) centre in India. You must book a biometric appointment after completing your online visa application.
How early should I apply for a student visa?
+
Apply as soon as you have your CAS/I-20/CoE (country dependent) — usually 6–8 weeks before your course start date. For UK visa, you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts. Never leave it last minute as unexpected delays can jeopardise your enrolment.
Can I apply for a student visa with a previous UK visa refusal?
+
Yes, but you must declare it. A previous refusal does not automatically disqualify you — the key is understanding why it was refused and addressing those specific points in your new application. We review your refusal letter and build a targeted reapplication strategy.
Do I need police clearance certificate for a student visa?
+
Some countries require a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) — Australia requires it for students planning to stay more than 12 months. The UK does not routinely require it. The USA may require it depending on individual circumstances. We advise specifically for your destination country.
What is the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) for UK?
+
The IHS is a fee paid by international students as part of the UK visa application. It is currently £776 per year of study. This grants full access to the NHS. For a 1-year Master's degree, you pay £776. For a 2-year course, you pay £1,552. It is paid upfront during the online visa application.
Can I travel outside the UK while on a student visa?
+
Yes — UK Student visa holders can travel freely in and out of the UK. However, extended absences from your university can affect your attendance record (universities monitor this). Always inform your university if you plan to travel during term time, and return before your visa expiry date.
IELTS, TOEFL & English Tests
What is the difference between IELTS Academic and IELTS General?
+
IELTS Academic is required for university admissions (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD). IELTS General Training is used for work visas, migration, and some diploma programmes. For studying abroad at university level, you usually need IELTS Academic. We advise on exactly which test to take.
How many times can I take IELTS?
+
There is no limit on the number of times you can take IELTS. Scores are valid for 2 years. You can take it as many times as needed to achieve your target score. We advise on a smart preparation strategy to minimise the number of attempts needed.
Which is easier — IELTS or TOEFL?
+
There is no definitive answer — it depends on the individual. IELTS uses British English and includes a face-to-face speaking test. TOEFL is fully computer-based and uses American English. Students who prefer writing on paper often find IELTS easier; those comfortable with computers often prefer TOEFL.
What is a good IELTS score for UK universities?
+
6.0 is the minimum for most universities (with no band below 5.5). 6.5 is the standard for the majority of Master's programmes. 7.0 is required by top Russell Group universities. 7.5+ is required for very competitive programmes. We help you target the right universities for your current score.
How should I prepare for IELTS?
+
Recommended preparation: practise with official Cambridge IELTS books, use the British Council or IDP preparation materials, take timed mock tests for each section, focus on your weakest module, and aim for at least 8–12 weeks of dedicated preparation. We provide IELTS training guidance and refer you to trusted IELTS coaching centres where suitable.
Is IELTS mandatory for all countries?
+
IELTS is required by most UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand universities. Many US universities accept TOEFL instead. Germany often accepts IELTS or TestDaF. Some universities also accept Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic, or Cambridge C1 Advanced. We advise the best test for your specific country and university targets.
Can I get admission without IELTS?
+
Some universities offer conditional admission with an internal English test or by enrolling in a pre-sessional English programme first. Additionally, students from certain English-medium institutions in India may be waived from IELTS in specific cases. We advise on IELTS waiver possibilities for your specific background.
What is IELTS band score and how is it calculated?
+
IELTS has four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each scored 0–9 in 0.5 increments. The overall band score is the average of all four modules, rounded to the nearest 0.5. For example: L7.0 + R6.5 + W6.0 + S6.5 = average 6.5 overall band.
What is PTE Academic and is it accepted abroad?
+
PTE (Pearson Test of English) Academic is a computer-based English test fully accepted by most UK, Australian and Canadian universities and for student visas. Results are typically available within 48 hours. Many students find PTE easier to score well in due to its AI-based marking system.
How long is an IELTS score valid?
+
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Both universities and visa authorities require scores to be within this 2-year validity period at the time of your application. Plan your IELTS test date carefully so your score remains valid for both your university application and your visa application.
Fees, Scholarships & Education Finance
Are there scholarships available for Indian students studying abroad?
+
Yes — many scholarships exist. UK: Chevening Scholarship (fully funded), Commonwealth Scholarship, university merit scholarships (£1,000–£5,000). USA: Fulbright Program, university assistantships. Canada: Vanier Graduate Scholarships. Australia: Australia Awards. We research and apply for eligible scholarships alongside your university application.
Can I get an education loan for studying abroad?
+
Yes — major Indian banks offer education loans for studying abroad: SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, Avanse, and InCred. Loan amounts range from ₹20 lakhs to ₹1.5 crore depending on collateral. We guide you through loan documentation, what's accepted, and how to match your loan sanction letter to your visa requirements.
How much education loan can I get for studying in the UK?
+
For studying in the UK: up to ₹75 lakhs without collateral (select lenders) and up to ₹1.5 crore with collateral (property, FD etc). The loan must cover tuition + visa funds + living costs. We advise on the most suitable lender for your specific profile and repayment capacity.
What is the Chevening Scholarship?
+
The Chevening Scholarship is a prestigious, fully funded UK government scholarship for outstanding students from around the world. It covers tuition, living costs, flights, and visa fees for a 1-year Master's degree at any UK university. Applications open each year in August–November. We help you craft a strong Chevening application.
Do I need to show funds upfront for a student visa?
+
Yes — for a UK visa, funds must be in your bank account for 28 consecutive days before you apply. A bank loan sanction letter is accepted (money doesn't need to be disbursed). For USA, you show bank statements. For Canada, a GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD 20,635 is required. We advise exactly how to structure your financial documents.
What is a GIC and why is it needed for Canada?
+
A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a deposit of CAD 20,635 with a participating Canadian bank (SBI Canada, CIBC, Scotiabank etc) required as part of the Canadian student visa application. The amount is released to you in instalments after you arrive in Canada to cover living costs. We guide you on which GIC provider to use.
Can part-time work income cover my living expenses abroad?
+
Partially. In the UK at 20 hours/week: approximately £700–£1,000/month, covering roughly 50–75% of living costs outside London. In Australia: can cover most living costs. In Canada: approximately CAD 800–1,200/month. We advise on realistic budgets and cost-saving strategies for each country.
What is the Commonwealth Scholarship?
+
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) offers fully funded scholarships for Master's and PhD students from Commonwealth countries, including India, to study in the UK. It covers tuition, stipend, flights, and visa fees. Competition is high but very rewarding. Applications open annually. We assist with eligible applications.
Are university merit scholarships automatic or do I need to apply?
+
Many UK and Australian university merit scholarships are automatically considered when you apply for admission — no separate application needed. Others require a short scholarship application or essay. We ensure scholarship eligibility is checked for every university we apply to on your behalf.
How do I send money to my child studying abroad?
+
International money transfers can be made via your Indian bank's SWIFT transfer, or through services like Wise, BookMyForex, or RBI-authorised money changers. Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), Indian residents can remit up to $250,000/year per person. We advise on cost-effective and compliant remittance options.
SOP, LOR & University Applications
What is an SOP (Statement of Purpose)?
+
An SOP is a personal essay (typically 500–1,000 words) submitted with your university application. It explains who you are, your academic background, why you chose this specific course and university, your career goals, and how this degree will help you achieve them. A strong SOP is often the deciding factor in competitive applications.
How long should an SOP be?
+
Most universities specify a word limit (500–1,500 words or 1–2 pages). UK universities typically want concise SOPs (500–800 words). US university personal statements can be up to 1,000–1,500 words. Always follow the specific university's guidelines. We write customised SOPs for each university.
What is an LOR (Letter of Recommendation)?
+
An LOR is a reference letter written by a professor, employer, or supervisor vouching for your academic abilities, work ethic, and character. Most universities require 2–3 LORs. Academic LORs should come from your Bachelor's professors; professional LORs from your manager/employer. We guide recommenders on what to include.
Can I use the same SOP for multiple universities?
+
No — each SOP should be customised for each university and course. Admissions committees can easily identify generic SOPs. The university name, specific course modules, faculty, research groups, and how they align with your goals should be different for each application. We write tailored SOPs for every university you apply to.
How many universities should I apply to?
+
We recommend applying to 6–10 universities: 2–3 reach universities (slightly above your profile), 3–4 match universities (well-suited to your profile), and 2–3 safe universities (below your profile but still high quality). This maximises your chances of receiving at least one strong offer.
What is a personal statement for UK universities?
+
UK universities (via UCAS for UG, direct for PG) require a personal statement explaining your motivation for the course, relevant academic and professional background, and future career goals. For postgraduate applications, it is essentially the same as an SOP. YKR Global writes these as part of our standard application service.
What academic documents do I need for university applications?
+
Standard requirements: 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates, Bachelor's all-semester mark sheets and degree certificate, IELTS/TOEFL scorecard, updated CV/resume, SOP, 2–3 LORs, valid passport copy, and work experience letter (if applicable). We provide a complete document checklist tailored to your target countries.
Will a low GPA affect my study abroad chances?
+
A low GPA reduces but does not eliminate your options. A strong IELTS score, excellent SOP, relevant work experience, and strong LORs can compensate. Many universities consider the overall profile rather than GPA alone. We identify universities with flexible entry requirements that match your specific academic background.
Is work experience necessary for studying abroad?
+
For most Master's programmes, work experience is not mandatory but adds significant strength to your application, especially for MBA and business courses. Some top MBA programmes require 2–5 years. For science, engineering and technology Master's degrees, strong academics matter more than work experience.
How long does it take to get a university offer?
+
UK universities typically respond within 2–6 weeks. US and Canadian universities take 4–8 weeks. Australian universities are usually faster (1–4 weeks). Processing times vary by university and intake popularity. We track all your applications and follow up on your behalf to ensure prompt responses.
Student Life, Accommodation & Settling Abroad
What accommodation options are available abroad?
+
Options include: university-managed halls of residence (safest for first year, book early), private student accommodation (Unite Students, Vita, Scape), private house/flat sharing, and homestay. University accommodation typically costs £120–£200/week in the UK. We advise on booking accommodation before you arrive.
How do I open a bank account as an international student in the UK?
+
Easiest options for Indian students: Monzo, Revolut, or Starling (app-based, open before you arrive). Traditional banks (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds) require proof of address after arrival. We recommend setting up a Monzo account before departure so you have a card from day one in the UK.
Is Indian food available abroad?
+
Yes — all major UK, Canadian, Australian, and US cities with Indian student populations have Indian grocery stores, restaurants, and temples. Cities like Leicester (UK), Brampton (Canada), and Melbourne (Australia) have thriving Indian communities. Cooking at home is also easy as Indian groceries (dal, rice, spices) are widely available.
How cold is it in the UK and will I adapt?
+
UK winters are cold (0–8°C) but not extreme. Heavy snowfall is rare. Rain is more common. Most Indian students adapt within a few weeks. Investing in a good winter coat, thermals, and waterproof shoes before arriving makes the transition much easier. We provide a pre-departure packing guide.
What is the cost of living in the UK for Indian students?
+
Outside London: £1,000–£1,300/month covering accommodation, food, transport, and personal expenses. In London: £1,500–£2,000/month. Grocery shopping, cooking at home, and using student discounts (Unidays, Student Beans, TOTUM card) significantly reduce monthly expenses.
How do I get a National Insurance Number (NIN) in the UK?
+
A National Insurance Number (NIN) is needed to work legally in the UK. You can apply online on the GOV.UK website after arriving. The application is free and takes 4–8 weeks. You can start work before receiving it by giving your employer a temporary NIN letter. We guide you through this process at pre-departure.
Is an Indian driving licence valid abroad?
+
An Indian driving licence is valid in the UK for up to 12 months. After that, you must convert to a UK licence. In many UK cities, public transport is excellent and a car is not necessary. In the USA, Canada and Australia, having a car can be more important because public transport is less comprehensive outside major cities.
Can I visit India during my studies?
+
Yes — you can travel to India during university holidays (Christmas break, Easter, summer). Always ensure your re-entry visa is valid, your attendance record is in order before leaving, and that you return before term begins. BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) holders can travel in/out of the UK freely.
What mental health support is available for students abroad?
+
All UK universities have dedicated Student Wellbeing services providing free counselling, mental health support, and peer support groups. The NHS also provides mental health services. Additionally, YKR Global maintains contact with our students after arrival, providing a familiar point of contact during the adjustment period.
What SIM card should I use when I arrive in the UK?
+
Best UK SIM cards for Indian students: Lebara (cheapest international calls to India), giffgaff (good data), Three (unlimited data plans), and O2 (wide coverage). A Lebara SIM with an India call pack is the most popular choice among Indian students for staying in touch with family back home.
